A possible fix for overheating 4.0's.... I stumbled on this information by accident when I was searching for the next thing to replace that could possibly be causing my overheating problem with my 2000 wrangler tj 4.0. X2, that problem is typically caused by a bad fan clutch causing the fan to not pull enough air through the radiator when you're idling/sitting still. I wasn't sure what was happening so I shifted my automatic transmission into neutral and then back into drive and the Jeep started jerking.

Heat the water to the temp the thermostat is supposed to open at, put it into the water and see if it opens. If that checks out OK, I'd give the radiator a good flushing. I saw this question come up and I don't recall anyone having any real issues with overheating, however if you would rather be sure not to cause a problem one solution is to get an off-road bumper where the winch is recessed.
